"What are all those funny looking squares in this issue of Que Viva?"

In place of my column this month, Que Viva's technology guru, Eddie Padin will explain how to navigate your way through our Mobile Smartphone Edition of Que Viva. It is just one of the ways Que Viva and Latin Media are keeping up with the latest and greatest in the world of technology. Have fun with it!

Editorial Director, Lisette Guillen

It seems that everywhere we look we're bombarded with new technology. Facebook this & Twitter that. Laptops the size of your wallet and mobile phones that can do more than most people's desktop computers. This is a new age of media, particularly when it comes to mobile technology. It is as if every six months companies like HTC & Apple are releasing new phones outdating the $400 device you just bought. The new Android & iphone markets are taking the world (your wallet) by storm and well, if you haven't figured it out yet, those nifty little devices can do a bit more than just drunk dial your buddies at 3am or text message your friend sitting directly across the table from you.

One thing that we've come across is an awesome feature that most smartphones are utilizing now, called a Snap Tag. You've probably seen them before: a small square with an interesting logo in the center or containing a weird color scheme, remnant of the finger paintings we all used to draw as kids. Outside of offering a chance to reminisce of our childhood years, these Snap Tags offer so much more: A vehicle that takes you on a trip, courtesy of your mobile Smartphone, to anywhere on the web. We'll spare you the details on the technical aspects of how it actually works; so just imagine an internet link, except in the real world. It's an opportunity for you to explore dynamic new content with just a push of the button on your mobile smartphone.

As exciting as all this seems, we've decided to dedicate this entire issue as: The Mobile Smartphone Edition; Offering tons of live & dynamic content for you to access while you're flipping through this month's issue.

Since this is a relatively new concept, we figured we'd include some pointers for those who aren't too familiar with how Snap Tags work.

Here are a few things to keep in mind:

Download the Application

Before you start snapping, you have to make sure you have the proper app on your phone. It's as easy as going to the iphone, Android, or Windows market place via your Mobile Smartphone and searching Microsoft Tag Reader, download and the rest is taken care of from there. You can also go to: http://gettag.mobi

Make Sure the App is Open

When you see the Snap Tag symbol, just open the Tag Reader app on your Mobile Smartphone, point your camera at the image and voila! You're exploring new dynamic features!

Why WiFi?

Since a lot of the content you'll be able to access can take a bit of time to load on a normal cell phone signal, it sometimes is best if you connect to a wireless network if available. Please keep in mind that this is not absolutely necessary in order to view each snap tag, but just a way for things to run smoother with your phone.

Not All Phones are Created Equal

Not all mobile phones are able to use the Snap Tag feature. Snap Tags are specifically reserved for Mobile Smart Phones only. Your phone must have a mobile internet browser in order surf the net. If your phone is not compatible, stop by our website: www.quevivaindiana.com and send us an email to let us know. Make sure to include the type of phone & operating system (android, winmobile, iphone, etc).

So are you ready to snap?

How about we get you started by snapping the tag below for a chance to win a $100 Gas Card!

Download the App on Your Mobile Browser :

Every time you see one of these symbols in the magazine, in an advertisement, story, or pictorial pull out your Smartphone and start snapping!

mcdermottA Message From Hammond Mayor Thomas McDermott Jr.

Summer is here, which means Hammond is ready for the 8th Annual Festival of the Lakes!

Our 2010 event was a huge success, as over 50,000 people participated in the activities highlighting Hammond's three lakes. This year promises to surpass last year, providing our great community another five days of summer fun.

Free live entertainment will be held nightly on the main stage, with great musical acts such as The Whispers, Salt N Pepa, .38 Special, Pat Benatar and Neil Giraldo, Pancho Barraza and other fantastic opening acts as well.

There will also be great family events throughout the week, such as the 5K Run/Walk On the Lake, the Hot Rod & Custom Car Show, the Mik Lurch Fishing Derby, and many others. We've also brought back the popular Carnival Mega Pass, which allows unlimited carnival rides from open until close during the Festival.

You'll be glad you came out for this fantastic event – I hope to see you there!

andradeThe 1950s and 60s were a tough and tumultuous time for Mexican-Americans. Many immigrants were faced with the prospect of a life of labor in order to realize their version of the American dream. Picking cantaloupe, cabbage, and cotton in the sweltering Texas sun since age four, Juan Andrade Jr. looked back on 18 years of toil as a farmhand and wiped away the sweat on his brow with an indomitable sense of pride, knowing that he was meant for so much more in America. Leaving a life of labor behind, Andrade Jr. pursued education as a means of making a difference for his fellow Mexican-Americans. Read More »

New interactive maps show Latino growth

A Hispanic based organization is making their website easier to use and more interactive for those visiting it. The Pew Hispanic Center, a project of the Pew Research Center, has added a tab to their data and resources section known as interactive maps. These maps show the Latino population, share and growth in the nation's more than 3100 counties for 1980, 1990, 2000 and 2009 and how its size and distribution across counties has changed since 1980. The interactive maps are easy to understand and even easier to navigate through. There's a slider on the page that allows you to go through the years and shows the changes and growth over time. This particular map focuses on population share and growth and as example shows and describes the changes.  Read More »
